In 2022, Jon Batiste began composing an original symphony for Carnegie Hall titled “American Symphony.” He wanted to reimagine music’s classical traditions by bringing together an expansive and inclusive diaspora of music. It would be his most ambitious challenge yet. But, in the midst of this, he learned that his wife Suleika’s long dormant cancer had returned. The creation of “American Symphony” then became two-fold - a symphony of the journey of life and the creation of art – and was documented in the Matthew Heineman-directed Netflix film American Symphony, produced in collaboration with Mercury Studios and Barack and Michelle Obama’s production company Higher Ground.

Jon Batiste composed and performed the song “It Never Went Away” for the end credits of this film. Co-written with Dan Wilson, the track sees Batiste explore love, mortality, and the enduring nature of our deepest desires over solo piano.
